COE 100 - Supporting Readers with Dyslexia
Description

This course will give P - 12 educators a comprehensive overview of the history, theory and instructional practices in the science of reading and structured literacy for students with dyslexia. The six units will include lectures, demonstrations, simulations, assessments of knowledge, and feedback. Learn pedagogical techniques that are evidence-based and specifically tailored to address dyslexia related challenges.
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will receive a certificate of completion, exhibiting 15 hours of professional development and the skills earned.

- Know the nature and characteristics of individuals with language learning differences/deficits including dyslexia.
- Understand the history, theory and nature of reading instruction, the science of reading, and structured literacy as it relates to meeting the needs of students with dyslexia.
- Be familiar with the common dyslexia comorbidities and impact on student learning.
- Learn the principles of guided discovery teaching as it applies to students with dyslexia.
- Participate in class activities and class assignments designed to develop intimate understanding of the expected learning profile of learners with dyslexia.
- Be familiar with the specific professional terminology related to dyslexia.
- Understand the rationale and significance of “learning without failure.”


Tammi Hope has been with Phillips Fundamental Learning Center since 2016 as an instructor with the Rolph Literacy Academy. In 2017, Tammi completed training to become a Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT). She graduated from Fort Hays State University with a Master of Science in Instructional Technology, met requirements as a Qualified Instructor (QI) through the Academic Language Therapy Association as well as Certified Structured Literacy Dyslexia Specialist through the International Dyslexia Association. Tammi currently supports the PFLC Andeel Teacher Training Institute as Director of Business Management.
